Here is a link to a great article titled "When You Swallow a Grenade" by Carl Zimmer and published on the National Geographic web page. It gives a brief history of anitbiotics and their role in changing gut flora.

    Thank you for this. I read it and my blood was boiling. As a child of the 80's I was prescribed antibiotics ALL THE TIME, even when I as well and my brother or sister were sick. And in adult hood, it was prescribed ALL THE TIME for sinus infections. And then finally at 26 I developed Crohn's Disease after 3 straight days of intravenous antibiotics due to my undiagnosed lupus symptoms of pleurisy. Anyway, I really liked reading this. Very informative. Thank you!!!

      Thanks Amber, Antibiotics were a staple of my childhood as well. It was highly likely I was Celiac from infancy, however, I believe the antibiotics were a factor in my Crohn's too. My son slid into autism after spending three week on antibiotics at 18 mos of age.
